Alejandro Werner is the founding director of the Georgetown Americas Institute and a nonresident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute.
Mr. Werner has had distinguished careers in the public and private sectors as well as in academia. Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors of BBVA-Mexico and Acciona Energía. Some of his previous positions have been: Undersecretary of Finance and Public Credit of Mexico (December 2006–August 2010), Director of Economic Policy and Chief of Staff at the Finance Ministry of Mexico, and Head of Corporate and Investment Banking at BBVA-Bancomer.
One of his most distinguished roles was serving as Director of the Western Hemisphere Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from January 2013 to August 2021. In this capacity, he oversaw the relationship with the 34 member countries from the Americas and the Caribbean (including the United States and Canada), managing bilateral and regional surveillance, program design and negotiations, technical assistance and regional research agenda, seminars, and conferences.
Earlier in his career, he was Director of Economic Studies at the Bank of Mexico and has taught at ITAM, Instituto de Empresa, and Yale University. He has been published widely and is the author of Argentina en el Fondo: La intimidad de la lucha con el FMI 2013-2023.
Mr. Werner was named Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2007. He received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1994 and his B.A. from ITAM (Mexico) in 1990.
